Spiral was built to build open alternatives: open-source money, open-source tools, and new ways to openly fund contributors to both. Founded in 2019 as a Block initiative for the public good, Spiral creates and funds open-source bitcoin and AI projects, including the Lightning Development Kit, the Bitcoin Development Kit, the Goose Development Kit, and hundreds of grants to independent contributors around the world.
THE NAME
It's Spiral. Not SpiralBTC, not Spiral BTC, and definitely not Square Crypto (weird phase, we got over it). Our Substack handle is @spiralbtc because someone got the good name first, but in writing it's always just Spiral. And when quantities of bitcoin come up, you use the ₿ symbol — ₿5,000 beats 0.00005000BTC.
